Charlie McCartney had played with West Melbourne before joining South Melbourne where he played 14 games in 1897. He returned to West Melbourne for a season before coming to Essendon in 1899.

His only games for Essendon were in Rounds 7, 8 and 9, 1899, for losses to Collingwood and Fitzroy and a win over St Kilda.

He worked for the International Harvester Company for nearly fifty years, retiring in 1940.

McCartney died on 26th May 1949.
