Daniel McAlister was no. 5 pick in the 1996 Draft. He was born of Maori heritage in New Zealand and played rugby union and softball as a child. His family moved to Tasmania in 1990, first settling in Smithton and then Hobart. He played with the Tassie Mariners and was selected in the state team.
He made his senior debut in1997 playing in the last two games of the year. Injury sidelined him through 1999 and then he played well in the opening Ansett Cup side of 2000.
He played in the VFL for the season but was unable to force his way back into the seniors. He played one game in 2001 and was delisted at the end of the season.
McAlister was re-drafted back to Essendon for 2002, but after playing only three games he was delisted at the end of the season.
He then played with Wodonga Raiders in the Ovens and Murray League.
