Alby Matheson's only game was in Round 3, 1905, which Essendon lost to Melbourne.
He was trained as a teacher in Victoria but he enlisted in the Royal Australian Artillery in Sydney in 1906. He remained a professional soldier until he left the Army in 1920. By then he had risen to the rank of captain. He served in France during World War I.
While based in Sydney he played for North Shore from 1907 to 1910 and captained the team in 1908. He was selected to play for NSW six times between 1909 and 1911.
His brother Harry played for St Kilda, Carlton and Collingwood.
Matheson died on 27th October, 1934, aged only 49.
