MARTYN, Percy

Percy Martyn was a talented defender who was originally from Warrnambool but began his football career with Inglewood and played in their 1910 premiership.

Moving to Melbourne, he played nine games with St Kilda in 1912 before moving to Richmond in 1913. He was an excellent place kick and goalkicker. He kicked 50 goals in his 21 games at Richmond and was the first Richmond player to kick 30 goals in a season.

He played the first two games of the 1915 season with Richmond then transferred to Essendon and played his first game in Round 7.

He became a fine defender and played every game in 1920. He was selected in the State side in 1920 and also represented the League against Ballarat in 1921.

Players were often given unusual trophies in the early days and Martyn was presented with a box of ties in 1920, perhaps because he played every game that year.

Martyn moved to Tasmania after leaving Essendon, becoming playing coach of North Hobart, then North Launceston and Devonport.

He returned to Victoria and was captain-coach of Eaglehawk and South Bendigo before returning to Inglewood in 1939.

He was also an excellent cricketer and played for Tasmania.

Martyn died on 13th January, 1962.
