Manning was recruited from St Kilda where he had played 31 games.
He played 25 games for Essendon and kicked 20 goals, playing mainly on the forward line or as ruck rover. He showed his talent in several excellent finals performances for Essendon, particularly in the 1989 second semi-final loss to Hawthorn. He was struck by Peter Schwab in that game and the Hawthorn player was suspended, causing him to miss the premiership win.
He played consistently in 1990, including the Preliminary Final, but he lost his place in the losing Grand Final team to Peter Somerville.
Manning played a further four games in 1991 but never quite fulfilled his potential.
