Arnold Maltby was a half-forward and wingman who came from Port Melbourne where he played from 1932 to 1935. He had been chased by just about every League club.

He started well, winning Essendon's Best First Year Player award in 1936, but he didn't fulfill this early promise and in 1939 he went to North Melbourne where he played two games before retiring.

He enlisted on 21st February 1942 and served with the 2/163 General Transport Company in World War II.

Maltby retired in 1973 after working as a linotype operator at The Age newspaper for 45 years.

He died on 25th August, 2003.
