Leo Maloney was a blond forward/ruckman from local club Lincoln Stars and had just turned twenty when he made his senior debut for Essendon.
He played in the Seconds in 1956 while he was also doing National Service which he finished in August.
He played seven games in 1957 and was a reserve in the losing 1957 Grand Final side in that year.
Maloney missed all of 1958 through injury, then joined Williamstown in 1959. He had immediate success there playing in the 1959 premiership team and coming second in their best and fairest award. He won their best and fairest award in 1963 and was selected in Williamstown's 1960s Team of the Decade. He played 107 games for Williamstown.
