Russell Madden was a tough, vigorous half-back who came from Geelong where he played three games in 1929 and 1931.

He played 11 games for Essendon in 1932, and returned in 1934 to play one further game.

He then played with VFA club Sandringham from 1936 to mid-1938, when he was cleared to Mangoplah Football Club in June 1938. He led them to the Albury and District Football League premiership that year before returning to Melbourne.

He enlisted in 1940 and served in the Mediterranean and Papua New Guinea.

Russell Madden died on 18th July, 1966.
