Player Profile

Bill Luff was an excellent full-forward and half-back flanker who came from VFA club Camberwell where he played from 1931 to 1933. Before that, he played with Blackburn and then Richmond Seconds.

He kicked 314 goals in 77 games for Camberwell and was named in Camberwell's Team of the Century (2003). He was the Association's leading goalkicker in 1933 and the first VFA player to kick more than 100 goals in a season.

In 1935, Luff returned to Camberwell for a season and was again the Association's leader goalkicker before returning to Essendon.

Luff lacked height and strength for the key position in the League and did better on the flank. He was evasive and a superb long punt kick.

He was Essendon's vice-captain in 1939.

Luff was runner-up in the Best and Fairest award in 1937 and won the Best Position Player award in 1938.

He was Essendon equal second top goalkicker in 1934 and third in 1936.

His father, Bill senior, played for Richmond in the VFA and VFL, and his uncle, Jim Luff, played for Richmond VFA.

Bill Luff died on 9th October, 1981.
