Sam Lonergan was chosen at pick 50 in the 2005 AFL National Draft.
He was selected as the most valuable player in the Under 18 Championships in 2005, won the Tassie Mariners Best and Fairest and was selected in the All Australian Under 18 team in that year.
He played 16 games with Bendigo Bombers in 2007 and was close to a senior call-up when a knee injury kept him out for the rest of the season.
He did not establish himself in the senior team until 2008 but played consistently on the forward line for the remainder of his career until he was traded to Richmond at the end of 2012. He played two games for Richmond in 2013 before moving to VFA club, Coburg, and then spending 2014 and 2015 at Glenelg in the SANFL.
He was appointed as the Launceston FC playing coach in 2016 but unfortunately was suspended from playing in 2016 as he was one of the 34 Essendon players suspended for that year due to the 2012 supplements saga.
Sam Lonergan was appointed as an assistant coach at Richmond in 2020.
