Edgar Croft was a forward who had the honour of scoring Essendon first ever goal in a VFL game, Round 1, 1897. It may even have been the first goal ever scored in a League game.
He had played six VFA games in 1896 and was later one of the best players in the 1897 premiership victory and kicked the winning goal.
An extremely fearless player, Croft suffered a number of dislocations and fractures which led to him to miss many games.
After he retired, he maintained his involvement with Essendon as a patron until 1918.
Croft died in 1946.
