Fred Coulsell was a true local, being born in Essendon, but he began his football career as a centre half-forward at Sunshine. Prior to that he played one game with North Melbourne in 1927 and before that, he had been with Yarraville, and earlier still with Public Service in the Sub District League. He had also played with the Railways in the Wednesday League.
He played two games with Essendon in early 1931 and his football was not helped by him having to walk from Sunshine to Essendon to train and play during the depression.
After leaving Essendon, he returned to Sunshine then later played with Braybrook.
Coulsell retired as a head storeman in 1972.
