David Collins was a centre half-forward from St Bernard's Old Collegians. He started disastrously when he sustained a facial fracture his first game. His career was then cut short when he missed most of 1970 through a knee injury and he was again dogged by injury in 1971.

He was a member of the Reserves premiership team in 1968 and won the Reserves Best Utility Player in the same year.

He played with Williamstown Football Club in the VFA in 1972 and 1973 and then became captain-coach of Aberfeldie in the EDFL in 1974 and 1975, winning a premiership in 1974.

In 1978, he returned to Essendon as a Forward Match Reporter for then Coach Barry Davis. In 1981, he was junior skills coach under Kevin Sheedy and joined the EFC match committee from 1981 to 1989.  He worked Overseas from 1990 to 1992 and rejoined the EFC Match Committee as Chairman from 1993 to 1998.

David joined the Essendon Past Players & Officials Association Committee in 2007. He served as Secretary of the Committee from 2011 to 2020 and became President in 2021.

He was appointed as an EFC life Member in 2012.
