Les Begley was a competent half-forward and follower who came from Warrnambool where he had played from the age of 15.
He was extremely fit and his career was cut short through his Army service. He originally served in the CMF from 31st October 1941 to 25th July 1942, then transferred to the AIF where he served from 26th July 1942 to 16th August 1946. He served in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands with the 15th Infantry Brigade, and a team-mate, Charlie Challenger, served in the same unit.
He had been a member of the Seconds premiership team in 1941.
When Begley left the Army, he returned to Essendon Seconds in 1946 and then went to Camperdown from 1948 to 1951.
He died on 24th August, 1994.
