Player Profile

Roger Hampson was a wingman who arrived at Essendon Reserves in 1968 from La Trobe University.

He was a member of the Essendon Reserves premiership team in 1968 and made his senior debut in Round 9 in an away loss to Carlton. Hampson played eight consecutive games that season before having his season cut short by a serious knee injury. However he'd shown enough to be nominated as one of the League's top recruits that year and also won the Club's Best First Year Player award.

Hampson's knee injury was such that he missed all of 1970. He returned to play in Rounds 5 and 6 in 1971 for a total of 10 senior games.

He left Windy Hill in mid-1971 and joined Northcote and then played with Sandringham in 1972. Following this, he became captain-coach of East Caulfield in 1973 and 1974 and then captain-coach of Balwyn from 1975 to 1977.

From 1978 to 1981, he was captain-coach of Edithvale-Aspendale and he coached the Mornington Peninsula League side. Then he became assistant coach of the Melbourne U19s from 1982 to 1985.

Roger Hampson later returned to Essendon when he was appointed the Club's general manager in 1989, a position which he held until 1996.
