Kelvin Steel, known as "Stainless", was a defender who came from Hawthorn where he played 19 games from 1974 to 1977. He had gone from Surrey Hills to the Hawks Under 19s in 1972. He stood out from football in 1978 to further his studies.
Steel played six games with Essendon in late 1979 and was captain of the Reserves in 1980. He won the Reserves Most Courageous award in 1979.
He retired from playing in 1981 but stayed on to assist the Reserves in a semi-official capacity.
